Anger – What to Do
What is it about anger that makes us so badly want to be free of it? Is it the searing inner heat? The feeling out of control? The fear we might actually do harm we will later regret? “

Mindbody
“If you’ve ever felt the stress of running late to an appointment, you’ve experienced the visceral impact of the mindbody connection. Imagine your daughter is next to you in the car, she’s the star in the soccer playoffs, and you get stuck at a train crossing. The minutes are ticking by. Physically, you’re just sitting in a car. But what’s going on in your body?”

Breaking Patterns
When I went through a painful divorce in the 1980’s, I –to my horror –began to rapidly gain weight for the first time in my life. I went from size 4 to size 14 in a matter of months. I was completely out of control. It took me a while to uncover why I couldn’t get on top of my own behavior. It was not until I began to explore the depth of loneliness and sadness I was experiencing that my weight turned around. And this happened AFTER I dropped all attempts at dieting.

I believe much of the obesity epidemic has its roots in the pain that we experience by believing false messages about ourselves.” …

Good Enough
Every morning before heading out into the world, I go inward to bask in the deep quiet of my soul. There are umpteen books scattered around my upstairs writing alcove, where I nest for this ritual. Inner Guidance tells me which book to pick up, and what to read. Invariably, the various passages I turn to will be saying the same thing. They may be written hundred years apart – but the message is the same. I still find this astonishing.

Diabetes – Holistic Approach
I strongly encourage individuals to discover areas in their lives in which taking more responsibility for choice supports well-being.

A case in point was a recent story shared with me of ‘Sandler,’ a woman who claimed to have healed herself from the ravaging results of diabetes mainly by changing her lifestyle and attitude. When I first heard Ms Sandler’s story, I was intrigued. “…

FEAD It Differently

When I rolled out my first series of Mindful Eating classes in 2006, I had no idea how deeply the class participants would be getting into the roots of their maladaptive eating patterns. We were soon opening up hidden reservoirs of pain and suffering – many of which had their origins in the antiquity of their lives – sometimes even for generations. I realized that the acronym from my book, The Heart of Healing, “FEAD” worked well as an appropriate underpinning for this class, too. By Facing, Embracing, Allowing Space and invoking Divine Grace, class participants began to find a different way to deal with the empty spaces left in the wake of attacks from these difficult voices inside. The continual stream of emails from former class participants expressing gratitude is an ongoing testimonial for the effectiveness of this new “non-diet” approach.”…

Integrative Primary Care
Integrative Medicine can be understood by looking at two main axes. The vertical axis refers to the fact that we are more than our biochemistry. Attending to the needs of our psychosocial, mental, emotional and spiritual selves as well as the physical constitutes an integrative approach. “…

Integrative Medicine Benefits
“Much has been written about integrative medicine in the past number of years. The words “integrative,” “complementary” and “alternative” often carry multiple meanings, which can be confusing. There are also many aspects of integrative medicine, some of them with incredible claims and practices which may seem too preposterous to lead to healing. “...

What is Mind Body Medicine
“Mind-body integration therapy has a different premise from conventional medicine in that what is valued is increased self awareness in addition to relief of symptoms. Disease can be seen as an opportunity for exploring lifestyles – choices – and attitudes. “…

PTSD

“Unlike most events that come and go in our lives, leaving but traces of memory, those experiences that we feel most meaningfully etch themselves deeply in the matrix of our neuronal network, where they can be replayed again and again, as if Òfor realÓ. This includes pleasant as well as traumatic events. This latter category has, in recent years, become recognized in its phenomenological experience as Òpost traumatic stress disorderÓ, or PTSD. “…

Organic Back to School

Is organic living and eating easy for you – until the school year rolls around?!”

Eating With Care

I am often asked for advice about “how to” change eating habits. Below is a short list of suggestions…

Forgiveness as Healing
It has been estimated that greater than 80 percent of all chronic pain has a strong emotional component. With recent data showing a clear correlation between hostility and heart disease, we can no longer ignore the evidence that the hurts, betrayals, and angers we hold close to our heart are, in fact, harming us.

Body Appearance
If you don’t like what you see when you look in the mirror, you are in the majority of the population.

Mindful Eating for the Holidays
Holidays, along with being a time of joy and sharing with family, can be a source of considerable stress. The combination of food-related celebrations with stress-induced cravings can wreak havoc on even the most perfectly crafted diet.

Hypertension
The end result of chronic high blood pressure is deterioration of the organs affected by it. The most common malady is an enlarged heart, since the muscle of the heart has to work overtime to compensate for the increased pressure against which it must pump blood throughout the body.

Pain
Have you ever wondered how your response to stress could possibly be linked to your perception of pain? The stress response we each have is hardwired. When we perceive a danger – real or imagined – it starts a bio-chemical cascade that has inevitable consequences.
